<image:title>Blog</image:title>
<image:caption>2017 These images were taken at the Austin Carey Forest in fall 2017. The area was purchased by the University of Florida and is part of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). While in this space I kept thinking of the financialization of nature, particularly the histories and politics that lay hidden in the landscape, in the language used by IFAS staff, and the educational materials provided by the University. In ya no hay tiempo, a short experimental video, I aim to parallel/meld/re-mix the historical capitalist patriarchal systems of modern photography//production while looking to people like Berta Caceres. I use the darkroom to highlight the urgency and timeliness of this self-destructive character. ¡Ya no hay tiempo!//There is no time!</image:caption>

<image:caption>In red de seguridad (2024), Montoya made a safety net from rosary beads, embroidery floss, and debris netting inspired by nets designated to collect debris from buildings under construction. This piece is influenced by a family story about Montoya’s father falling while working in Miami. She speculates that this accident is the root of physical trauma that later became a spinal tumor and she envisions this net could have protected him literally and spiritually. The process of beading together the delicate net mirrors the fragility of life in which there is a constant need for mending and maintenance. This piece was created as part of the Flowershop Art Studio and Residency in Brownsville, Texas. red de seguridad Debris netting, rosaries, and embroidery floss 33 in. x 61.5 in. x 2in. 1 of 1 2024</image:caption>

<image:caption>s.a.d (Seasonal Affect Disorder) in the tropics, is an ode to what will be lost in the future due to changing climate patterns. In this residency, I have asked myself a lot: “What will be lost? How will our domestic lives be transformed? How will it affect our vegetation at home?” In this speculative proposal, “real” plants no longer exist. This work is made from remnants of the real. The artificial ones do not try to replicate but glitch in their presentation hence the black and white textures. I made the plants from silver gelatin prints that are then laser cut into the shapes of the original plants. “[P]rendelo, vos!” is a white spiral neon that is a reference to the mosquito repellent coils used throughout the tropics in peak summer. In this imaginary, the rainy futures bring hoards of mosquitos and seasonal affect disorder prompting humanity to create reusable multi-function repellants (to repel depression + mosquito borne illnesses). The nuanced processing and reprocessing of information takes inspiration from Tristes Tropiques (1955) by Claude Levi-Strauss, a memoir by the renowned anthropologist and structuralist. Marcel Broodthears’ A Winter Garden (1974) and the dreary post-apocalyptic setting of Los Angeles in Blade Runner (1982) are loose inspirations. s.a.d in the tropics was created in residence at Radio28 in December 2022. <image:caption>In Between Sentiments September 2024 - February 2, 2025 “Sue Montoya documents the landscapes she moves through, layering memories and sentiments and pairing each with a song, which becomes an ongoing love letter to places left behind, people lost, and lived experiences. This series, Letras Viajeras (Traveling Letters), culminates in an ongoing heartfelt love letter to all the places she once knew. Multidimensional in its format, this photographic essay is activated by the viewer - visitors are invited to scan a QR code to listen to the playlist or take a postcard to mail, creating an interactive and engaging experience.” https://www.miami-airport.com/In_Between_Sentiments.asp</image:caption>

<image:caption>Letras Viajeras (2021-2024) or Traveling Letters is a playlist, video, and photo series in which I combine: postcards, rephotographing in different sites, and excerpts from love songs culminating in a long love letter to places left, people lost, and lived experiences. Postcards, photographs, and love songs: the currency of the love sick, nostalgic, and the wish you were here moments. The last few years have been filled with an immense amount of grief- loss of loved ones, friendships, places, and parts of ourselves. Music has been a key factor in identifying these feelings of sadness, isolation, love, joy, delicately woven in with the words found in songs like Monchy & Alexandra’s “Hoja en Blanco” to Japanese Breakfast’s cover of “Nobody Sees Me Like You Do” by Yoko Ono. I began this project over two years ago by photographing on 35mm or medium format while on long (mental health) walks. On these walks, I amassed a collection of 500 images which I’d like to share in the form of postcards that feature lyrics from the Letra Viajeras playlist. The images have been taken over in over 6 different cities through the U.S. and Mexico. The plan is to assign an excerpt from a love song to each one that speaks to feelings affiliated with that moment. The next step is to re-photograph the postcards and create a looping video of the postcards prior to its departure. Then, all of the short videos are assorted in a long love song with all of the excerpts read one after the other. Finally, a public playlist with the namesake is published on YouTube for the lovesick, nostalgic, grieving, and elated to bask in the sweet sorrow of our ephemeral viajes through life.</image:caption>
