In red de seguridad (2024), Montoya made a safety net from rosary beads, embroidery floss, and debris netting inspired by nets designated to collect debris from buildings under construction. This piece is influenced by a family story about Montoya’s father falling while working in Miami. She speculates that this accident is the root of physical trauma that later became a spinal tumor and she envisions this net could have protected him literally and spiritually. The process of beading together the delicate net mirrors the fragility of life in which there is a constant need for mending and maintenance. This piece was created as part of the Flowershop Art Studio and Residency in Brownsville, Texas.
